"Smith told Congress members he found proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in criminal activity'."
"I made my decisions without regard to President Trump's political association, activities, beliefs or candidacy in the 2024 election, Smith told the congressional panel."
"President Trump was charged because the evidence established that he willfully broke the law the very laws he took an oath to uphold."
Jack Smith returned to Congress to give public testimony about investigations that produced evidence he says met the standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in criminal activity. Smith insisted his investigations were nonpartisan and that he made charging decisions without regard to Trump’s political association or 2024 candidacy. Smith was appointed special counsel in 2022 after a career as a war-crimes prosecutor in The Hague and was tasked with independently investigating the 2020 election and the January 6 Capitol events, resulting in an August 2023 grand jury indictment on four charges.
