Former California political adviser admits to being secret agent for China
"From at least 2022 to 2024, the agent, 65-year-old Yaoning "Mike" Sun of Chino Hills, promoted PRC propaganda through a series of political maneuvers and close surveilling. According to a report Sun wrote to the PRC, his goal was to lead "delegations of U.S. dignitaries and cultural workers to China" and "persist in resisting any hostile forces that undermine the friendship of U.S.-China relations, and Chinese secessionist forces," the Feb. 9 release says."
""During the 2022 U.S. midterm elections, I orchestrated and organized my team to win the election for city council," Sun wrote. The unnamed elected official - whom Sun called a "new political star" - is merely referred to as "Individual 1" in court documents and was used to distribute PRC propaganda through an online publication targeting the local Chinese American community."
Yaoning "Mike" Sun, 65, pleaded guilty to acting as an illegal agent for the People's Republic of China and received a four-year federal prison sentence. From at least 2022 to 2024, Sun promoted PRC propaganda through political maneuvers, surveillance, and reported goals to lead delegations of U.S. dignitaries and cultural workers to China. Sun claimed to have orchestrated a city council election during the 2022 midterms and used an elected official to distribute PRC messaging to the local Chinese American community. Sun sought $80,000 to fund a pro-PRC demonstration, monitored Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, and provided real-time updates to PRC officials. Sun previously served in the People’s Liberation Army and worked with co-conspirator John Chen, a high-ranking PRC intelligence member.
