"Everybody gives their tax dollars to the government assuming it will be managed properly and used appropriately,"
"It is a breach of the trust that we put in our government employees, elected officials."
"I can't forgive myself for my behavior ... I feel like this will weigh on me for the rest of my life."
Tania Fernandes Anderson pleaded guilty to one count each of wire fraud and theft concerning a federally funded program and received a one-month prison sentence. She was ordered to pay $13,000 in restitution and given three years of supervised release. Prosecutors dismissed four additional wire fraud counts in exchange for the plea. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani called the crimes serious and heartbreaking and emphasized the breach of public trust when tax dollars are misused. Fernandes Anderson apologized, expressed remorse, asked for forgiveness, and acknowledged responsibility while visibly emotional. Prosecutors said financial difficulties and an ethics commission fine contributed to the conduct.
