Florida 'No Sharia Act' sponsor says immigrants who won't 'assimilate' should go elsewhere
"We know that here in America, we welcome legal migration, but we also want assimilation and you're not here to come to our country to change our beliefs and our founding principles, but to assimilate and become American and be a part of our country. And if you don't want to do that, then there are other places that are probably better suited for you,"
"Florida will never submit to foreign law, including sharia law, in any form, at any time, under any circumstance."
"rooted in lies, fearmongering and political distraction."
Florida Rep. Hillary Cassel introduced House Bill 119, dubbed the "No Sharia Act," to prevent enforcement of foreign law, including sharia, in Florida. Cassel said the bill aims to ensure the United States and Florida Constitutions always reign supreme. She stated that legal migration is welcome but emphasized expectation of assimilation and suggested immigrants unwilling to assimilate should consider other countries. Cassel expressed anticipation for legislative hearings on the proposal. The Council on American-Islamic Relations denounced the measure as rooted in lies, fearmongering and political distraction and described it as drawn from an Islamophobic playbook intended to stigmatize Muslims.
