Judge Susan Illston issued an order in San Francisco indefinitely blocking the Trump administration from finalizing an estimated 4,000 agency layoffs announced on Oct. 10, expanding an existing temporary restraining order. The injunction prevents federal agencies from issuing additional reduction-in-force (RIF) notices while the case proceeds. The Education Department cut nearly 500 employees, sparing the Office of Federal Student Aid but severely reducing the Office of Postsecondary Education and the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. The American Federation of Government Employees praised the ruling and warned of harm to services for students and families.
