"He said agents were expected to be conducting knock and talk visits with some residents throughout the city, though he said neither U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement nor anyone from the Department of Homeland Security contacted him directly to discuss details of their actions. As far as I know, this is kind of a voluntary check they're doing. It's not heavy handed, he said, but he added, I don't have all the details."
An undisclosed number of federal agents appeared in Fremont to knock on doors and seek voluntary cooperation from specific individuals. Agents arrived Saturday morning and had left the city by about 12:20 p.m., according to Fremont spokeswoman Geneva Bosques. City officials could not confirm which federal agency conducted the visits, how many agents were involved, or where they operated. Mayor Raj Salwan learned mid-morning from the city manager and said agents were expected to conduct knock and talk visits with some residents. Neither U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement nor the Department of Homeland Security contacted the mayor. Salwan characterized the visits as voluntary and stressed that Fremont does not conduct immigration enforcement, and city leaders emphasized building trust between residents and law enforcement.
