Parents of a 24-year-old Marine reservist were detained by ICE at Camp Pendleton while visiting family; the father was deported to Mexico and the mother remains in detention. The reservist, Sergeant Steve Rios, said his parents presented California driver's licenses obtained with work permits at the base gate and had done so on prior visits. After being asked to pull over, ICE agents detained them. Camp Pendleton launched an interagency security initiative in May with ICE, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service to deter unauthorized access and assist identity verification at certain entry points. Camp officials referred questions about the arrests to ICE, which declined to release case details.
