Robert Van Campen, an Everett City Councilor, unseated Mayor Carlo DeMaria by more than 600 votes in unofficial results. Van Campen presented his victory as a mandate for change and pledged to move the city forward. Carlo DeMaria served as mayor for 18 years and helped bring the Encore casino to Everett while pursuing a professional soccer stadium. DeMaria faced protests and scrutiny over roughly $180,000 in longevity payments that an inspector general audit found were questionably taken and hidden in the budget. DeMaria denied wrongdoing, refused to return the money, and previously won a $1.1 million defamation settlement.
