"El Jefe" Supported CBP's Information War and Violent Attack on Marimar Martinez - emptywheel
"someone at DOJ is attempting to undercut the other things Parente will release today, which reportedly show that Charles Exum lied to the FBI in order to get them to charge Martinez with assault, in part by obscuring that (as would happen with Renee Good months later) the bullets entered the vehicle from the front and the side, showing that he was never in danger, as claimed."
"And that's important because the most inflammatory thing Chicago's US Attorney's office released yesterday - precisely the thing they made a failing bid to suppress last week - were texts in which Exum described that "Everyone has been [supportive] including Chief [Greg] Bovino, Border Patrol Chief [Mike] Banks, Sec Noem, and El Jefe himself... according to Bovino." An email released yesterday shows that within hours, Bovino was offering to extend Exum's retirement "in light of your excellent service in Chicago.""
Materials released from the Marimar Martinez case were disclosed between DHS testimony and Martinez's anticipated lawsuit, shortly after Judge Georgia Alexakis approved a revised protective order. Christopher Parente stated the release appeared timed to blunt damaging evidence. DOJ released texts and emails including messages in which Charles Exum described support from Chief Greg Bovino, Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks, Secretary Noem, and “El Jefe,” and an email in which Bovino offered to extend Exum’s retirement. Documents reportedly show Exum lied to the FBI to obtain assault charges, obscuring that bullets entered the vehicle from the front and side, undermining his claim of danger. DHS has not disavowed slanderous claims against Martinez.
