El Centro, the largest city in Calif.'s Imperial Valley, lands in the spotlight
"It's also really emblematic of the other seven cities in Imperial County. It's a bunch of immigrants coming together, a bunch of workers coming together, to live in Imperial County, which shouldn't have happened, right?"
"It's this great anomaly."
Gregory Bovino, the vocal Border Patrol commander who oversaw Customs and Border Protection operations in Minneapolis and elsewhere, is being reassigned back to El Centro near the U.S.-Mexico border after the shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti and the resulting political fallout. El Centro lies south of the Salton Sea and functions as Imperial County’s principal city and power center. Imperial County is largely agricultural despite its desert location and includes many immigrants and workers. The county narrowly voted for Donald Trump in 2024, the first Republican win there in over three decades. Imperial County is California’s youngest county.
