Harjit Kaur, 73, lived legally in the United States since 1991, worked for two decades as a seamstress in Berkeley, and regularly attended a Sikh gurdwara. Kaur was denied asylum, appealed multiple times, and after a federal appeals-court denial sought to self-deport but lacked travel documents from the Indian Consulate for 13 years. She checked in with ICE roughly every six months and had annual work-permit renewals while ICE tried to secure documents. Kaur was arrested during a Sept. 8 check-in, detained at Mesa Verde and later moved to Lumpkin, Georgia, and was ultimately deported without advance notice.

""Around 2 a.m., without notifying the attorney, without any advance notice to anybody, [ICE] took her from Bakersfield, drove her to LA while in handcuffs yet again, and put her on a flight to Georgia,""
""I've been to Lumpkin, and it's as remote as remote can be,""
