Donald Trump says he will raise US global tariff rate from 10pc to 15pc one day after Supreme Court rules against previous tariffs
"During that period, his administration will work on issuing new and "legally permissible" tariffs, he said. "I, as President of the United States of America, will be, effective immediately, raising the 10pc Worldwide Tariff on Countries, many of which have been 'ripping' the US off for decades, without retribution (until I came along!), to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15pc level," he wrote in a Truth Social post."
"Brussels has the tools to hit back at the United States for its latest round of tariffs, France's trade minister Nicolas Forissier told the Financial Times on Saturday. The EU response could include options such as the "trade bazooka", an anti-coercion instrument (ACI) that could affect US technology companies, the newspaper said, citing French officials. The ACI has a broad range of powers from export controls to tariffs on services, as well as excluding US companies from EU procurement contracts, it said."
Following a Supreme Court ruling that deemed many of the existing tariffs illegal, the US president ordered an immediate 10pc tariff on all imports, layered atop existing levies. The law permits raising the tariff to 15pc for up to 150 days, though the measure could face legal challenges. The administration intends to draft new, "legally permissible" tariffs during that period. EU officials, led by France's trade minister, warned that Brussels has instruments to retaliate. Possible EU responses include an anti-coercion instrument (ACI) affecting technology firms, export controls, service tariffs, exclusion from procurement, and a suspended package of retaliatory tariffs covering over €90bn of US goods.
