The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has relinquished its control over Grants.gov, the federal website crucial for posting grant opportunities worth over $500 billion annually. This decision permits federal agencies to independently manage their Notice of Funding Opportunities (NOFO) without DOGE vetting. Following Elon Musk's departure, DOGE's influence diminished, impacting the timely announcement of various critical grants. Although DOGE will continue to aid in grant reviews, agency officials now have greater discretion in posting funding opportunities, signifying a shift in governance and operational dynamics within the federal grant process.
Since DOGE took control of Grants.gov, at least 30 announcements of funding opportunities have been delayed, impacting various crucial programs.
The White House stated that DOGE will continue to facilitate the review of grants while maintaining robust controls to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse.
