Grant Hardin, a convicted murderer, devised a six-month escape plan from Calico Rock prison, exploiting lax security in the kitchen. According to an internal review, he created a fake law enforcement uniform using items like Sharpie markers and a can lid for a badge. Hardin concealed his equipment in a trash can, confident it would go unchecked. His escape resulted from two staff members failing to follow security protocols leading to their termination. Despite building a ladder to climb the fence, he simply directed an officer to open the exit gate for him.
Hardin stated he spent six months planning his escape and used black Sharpie markers and laundry he found lying around the kitchen to create the fake uniform.
Two prison employees have been fired for procedure violations that led to Hardin's escape. They include a kitchen employee who allowed him on a back dock unsupervised.
Hardin fashioned a fake badge using the lid of a can and stated he would hide the clothes and other items he was going to need in the bottom of a trash can.
The kitchen's staff was very lax on security, Hardin told investigators, allowing him to gather what he needed for his escape.
