Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a new boater safety law, dubbed 'Lucy's Law', in honor of Luciana 'Lucy' Fernandez, a teenager killed in a 2022 boating accident. This legislation increases penalties for reckless boating that results in serious injury, now classified as felonies rather than misdemeanors, and toughens punishments for misleading police during investigations. The law was a response to a campaign by Lucy's parents, reflecting a community's effort to enhance safety standards in boating, particularly among youth.
"This moment marks not only the fulfillment of a promise, but the continuation of a movement - one born from heartbreak, sustained by hope..." said Lucy's parents.
House Bill 289, named Lucy's Law, ensures that reckless boating resulting in serious injuries now leads to felony convictions, previously just misdemeanors.
