"A New York City councilmember known for her fervent criticism of Israel faced harsh questioning at a recent gathering of the Democratic Socialists of America - because she had also spoken out against Hamas, as well as supporters of the terrorist organization who demonstrated outside New York synagogues. The comments came during Councilmember Shahana Hanif's interview earlier this month with the NYC-DSA Socialists in Office committee."
"But during the interview process, held both in-person and over Zoom, Hanif faced questioning for her condemnation of Hamas for its Oct. 7, 2023, attacks - which came belatedly in April 2024 - and her denouncement of protesters who chanted, "We support Hamas" outside a Queens synagogue in January, according to a recording obtained by Jewish Insider. "Something that concerned me is the comparison of protesters who chanted support of Hamas to neo-Nazi protests,"
Shahana Hanif, a New York City councilmember and DSA member, received questioning from the NYC-DSA Socialists in Office committee during an endorsement interview. Hanif previously criticized Israel and faced a centrist challenger last year. Committee members pressed her over her April 2024 condemnation of Hamas’s Oct. 7 attacks and her denouncement of demonstrators who chanted "We support Hamas" outside a Queens synagogue in January. A participant challenged equating support for Palestinian resistance with neo-Nazi antisemitism and cited rising Gen Z support for Hamas. Hanif asked for clarification and did not fully engage with the speaker’s Hamas comments.
