In a conversation on The New Yorker Radio Hour, editor David Remnick questioned Bret Baier regarding his off-the-record golf outings with Donald Trump. While Baier defended the merits of gleaning insights from the president in a relaxed setting, Remnick expressed concerns about potential coziness and bias in such relationships. Baier contended that journalists should seize opportunities to engage openly with influential figures. The discussion unfolded further as Baier invited Remnick to reflect on the ethics of similar engagements with other political leaders like Barack Obama, highlighting differing perspectives in journalistic integrity.
I think it's a great question... Tell me the journalist that won't take the three-hour off-the-record ability to pick the brain of the commander-in-chief.
I don't think it's bad to let him say his piece and to hear that side and press respectfully, but pointedly.
Maybe he doesn't love the interview... I had still played golf with him right around the time that I did that interview.
I find the whole off-the-record thing very frustrating.
