"Would you commit to just letting his mother know - as a mother-to-mother - if Andry is alive?"
"He was given an asylum appointment by the United States government. We gave him an appointment, we said, Andry, come to the border at this time and claim asylum, he was taken to a foreign prison in El Salvador."
"His mother just wants to know if he's alive. Can we check and do a wellness check on him?"
Rep. Robert Garcia confronted Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem about Andry Hernandez Romero, a gay hairdresser from Venezuela who arrived legally to seek asylum and was sent to the CECOT prison camp in El Salvador. Hernandez Romero received an asylum appointment from U.S. officials before transfer. CECOT has a reputation for torturing inmates. Lawmakers noted that migrants were transferred without courts determining immigration status or criminality and that the administration has not pursued returns. Noem said she did not know specifics and that the case falls under El Salvador's jurisdiction. Garcia requested a wellness check and notification to the family.
