Court Having Trouble Assembling Jury for Elon Musk Because People Hate Him So Much
"Whatever your opinion is on Mr. Musk, Twitter or Tesla, can you set it aside in the sense that you will judge the defendant based solely, emphasize solely, on the evidence produced in this trial and the law as I give it to you?"
"Even though you may have strong views on the presidency, this is not the forum where this is expressed,"
"Whatever your views of the presidency are, they are not going to influence your views in this case."
"I hate that guy and he has no moral compass,"
Elon Musk is set to stand trial in San Francisco federal court on allegations of manipulating Twitter's stock. The defense is struggling to find impartial jurors because many prospective jurors expressed strong negative opinions about Musk. Judge Charles R. Breyer questioned more than 90 potential jurors about their ability to set aside opinions and judge only the evidence and the law. Musk's ties to the Trump administration, including nearly $300 million in donations and leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), heightened bias concerns. Over a third of prospective jurors were dismissed as unable to be impartial; others with negative views remained, prompting dispute between counsel and the judge.
