On Thursday's edition of CNN's The Situation Room, Brown pressed Rollins about that fight, and repeatedly shot down the excuses she was given:"
"I will just tell you what I know this time, that the president 100% believed that the government would reopen, that these Democrats were playing games with people's lives and the food that they needed to survive, that at the end of this, surely these Democrats wouldn't go. 25 days, 30 days, 45 days, and that we would get this fully funded once the government reopened."
The administration fought federal court orders to pay full SNAP benefits during the government shutdown and repeatedly appealed those decisions up to the Supreme Court. USDA contingency funds were cited in 2019 as available to fund SNAP during funding lapses, but the recent approach resisted using those funds and delivered partial benefits. The president believed the shutdown would be short and expected funding once the government reopened, accusing Democrats of playing games with people’s food security. Courts ruled contingency funds could be used and not unconstitutional, while officials offered explanations that were repeatedly challenged on air.
