The Trump administration is seeking to reclaim $7.9 billion in foreign aid, claiming evidence of waste, fraud, and abuse. This request coincides with an impending Senate vote on the rescission package. Critics, including former USAID inspector general Paul Martin, argue that the administration presents little evidence to support these claims. Martin alleges that many assertions about fraud are unfounded. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that extensive reviews of USAID programs revealed issues, yet doubts remain about the validity and motivations behind the administration's actions.
As far as I know, never once has anybody in DOGE or in the new Administration referred to the [Inspector General] criminal allegations of fraud, waste, or abuse.
Frankly, the handful of examples I am aware of were just completely made up.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that staff at the State Department worked 'very long hours' over six weeks to review 6,500 USAID programs.
It was during these reviews that evidence of fraudulent expenditures, abuse, and waste was uncovered.
