Children, Pregnant Women Mistreated in Immigration Detention, Sen. Ossoff Says
Briefly

Sen. Jon Ossoff's investigation unveiled severe human rights violations in immigration detention centers during the first half of President Trump's second term. The investigation documented 510 credible reports of abuse, including 41 instances of physical and sexual abuse, and specific concerns regarding mistreatment of pregnant women and children. Ossoff's team conducted interviews with various sources including detainees and healthcare professionals, despite facing obstruction from the Department of Homeland Security, which dismissed the findings as "garbage." The senator criticized DHS for not adequately investigating these credible reports.
Of the 510 credible reports of human rights abuses uncovered by the investigation, Ossoff's office identified 41 reports of physical and sexual abuse of people in immigration detention, 14 reports of mistreatment of pregnant women, and 18 reports of mistreatment of children.
During the senator's monthslong investigation, which began in January, Ossoff's staff interviewed and received credible reports of abuse from dozens of witnesses and sources, including correctional staff, law enforcement officials, attorneys, detainees and their family members, doctors, and nurses.
Ossoff stated, 'For DHS to immediately issue a blanket denial without any due-diligence or investigations of these credible reports of human rights abuses in U.S. facilities, is absurd. It suggests they don't take seriously their obligation to investigate credible reports of human rights abuses in their facilities.'
