"I simply asked if they had a signed judicial warrant,"
"That's not a crime. That's a constitutional question. They shoved me twice and then cuffed me."
"It is very simple. That man has constitutional rights. I did not touch you. It is a public space. I am not trespassing. I am asking you, do you have a signed judicial warrant?"
"I am an elected official, and I am asking if you have a signed judicial warrant."
Alderperson Jessie Fuentes went to Humboldt Park Health after staff reported Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the emergency department. She asked plainclothes, armed agents whether they had a signed judicial warrant before questioning the detention of a hospitalized patient. The agents shoved and handcuffed Fuentes and escorted her out despite her asserting the patient’s constitutional rights and identifying herself as the ward’s elected official. The detained patient reportedly holds Temporary Protected Status and has no criminal record. The agents included a masked individual and a tattooed man who warned Fuentes to leave and threatened arrest. Video of the encounter circulated widely and hospital staff and patients were reportedly terrified.
