"California Gov. Gavin Newsom, already rumored to be a Democratic contender for president in 2028, has confirmed he's considering a run but said he won't make a decision until after the 2026 midterms. In an interview that aired over the weekend on CBS News Sunday Morning, he was asked if he's giving "serious thought" to seeking the presidency, and he replied, "Yeah, I'd be lying otherwise." He is in his second term as governor and can't run for that post again due to term limits."
"Newsom has been mostly an LGBTQ+ ally, but he shocked the community by hosting the late right-wing activist Charlie Kirk on his podcast and agreeing with Kirk that it's somehow unfair to let transgender girls and women compete alongside cisgender ones in sports. In 2004, when Newsom was mayor of San Francisco, he declared marriage equality in the city and county (the two entities are combined)."
Gavin Newsom is weighing a presidential bid for 2028 but will postpone a decision until after the 2026 midterms. He is in his second gubernatorial term and is term-limited. He has cultivated a public profile that includes trolling Donald Trump. His LGBTQ+ record is mixed: as San Francisco mayor in 2004 he declared marriage equality and San Francisco issued more than 4,000 marriage licenses during the "Winter of Love," though those marriages were halted and later annulled. Some Democrats feared those actions contributed to backlash and anti-marriage-equality ballot measures in 2004. Newsom won statewide office in 2010 and 2018. The 2021 recall targeted multiple issues including housing, homelessness, immigration, and COVID-19.
