"California has paused its plan to resume issuing contested commercial driver's licenses under pressure from the Trump administration, according to state transportation officials, leaving thousands of immigrant truck and bus drivers uncertain if they can keep their jobs. After a state review found more than 20,000 licenses had incorrect expiration dates, due to Department of Motor Vehicles clerical errors, the agency sent those drivers 60-day cancellation notices. The licenses of most of these drivers, 17,000, are now set to be rescinded on Jan. 5."
"Many of them are Sikh truckers, with roots in Punjab, India, who said they have valid work permits and the revocations threaten their livelihoods and families. "People are going to lose out. Most of these guys have homes, families, businesses," said Rajinder Singh Tanda, president at Global Truck Permits near Stockton, who has heard from many concerned truckers who could lose their license. "This will be a disaster in California.""
California paused a plan to resume issuing contested commercial driver's licenses after federal pressure and state review findings. The review identified more than 20,000 licenses with incorrect expiration dates caused by Department of Motor Vehicles clerical errors, prompting 60-day cancellation notices. Roughly 17,000 of those licenses are scheduled to be rescinded on Jan. 5. Many affected drivers are immigrant truck and bus operators, including large numbers of Sikh drivers with roots in Punjab, India, who report valid work permits and say revocations would imperil jobs, families and livelihoods. The federal government issued an interim rule limiting CDLs for many noncitizen applicants.
