Building Bridges in Oakland: From Classrooms to Coffee Shops - San Francisco Bay Times
"In Oakland, the work of building stronger communities happens everywhere-in City Hall chambers, in classrooms, and just as often across a café table in our neighborhoods. This past September, I was reminded of the power of connection as I had the privilege of convening conversations that brought government, schools, and neighbors together around a shared purpose: shaping a brighter future for our city."
"We heard from leaders across the district on everything from school safety to new pathways in computer science. What stayed with me most was the call from Superintendent Denise Saddler: "There is nothing more important than doing this work together. I call upon all of us to continue the dialogue, continue the support, continue listening to our students." That call for collaboration is exactly why this committee exists."
Community-building in Oakland occurs in City Hall chambers, classrooms, and neighborhood cafés. On September 22, the first Education Partnership Committee meeting in 2025 convened City Councilmembers, OUSD Board members, and student leaders to align resources and opportunities for young people. Student artwork and performances by Youth Poet Laureates emphasized culture and creativity as central to education. District leaders addressed school safety and new computer science pathways. Superintendent Denise Saddler urged continued collaboration, dialogue, support, and listening to students. Neighborhood gatherings at farmers markets, coffee shops, and park cleanups reinforce that policy is shaped by residents’ stories, questions, and hopes. Commitment continues toward the end of 2025 to maintain engagement.
