August payroll growth was very weak, with only 22,000 jobs added versus a 75,000 expectation and private payrolls at 38,000. The unemployment rate rose to 4.3% from July's 4.2%. June and July combined revisions reduced previously reported payrolls by 21,000 (June down 27,000 to -13,000; July up 6,000 to 79,000). Healthcare added 31,000 jobs while federal government employment fell 15,000 in August and is down 97,000 since January. Manufacturing employment decreased by 12,000, marking four straight monthly declines and a 78,000 year-over-year drop. Markets initially dipped then partially recovered.
