Ilya Lichtenstein pleaded guilty to money-laundering charges tied to the 2016 theft of about 120,000 bitcoins from the Bitfinex exchange and was sentenced to five years in prison. He served roughly 14 months before being released to home confinement under policies consistent with the First Step Act. A White House official confirmed the early release and noted that he served significant time. Heather Morgan (aka Razzlekhan), who also pleaded guilty to laundering the stolen crypto, received early release after about nine months. The pair were arrested in February 2022 and pleaded guilty in August 2023. Netflix released a 2024 documentary called Biggest Heist Ever about the burglars.
