"BILL MAHER: Let's talk about the Middle East first. We are confronted here with a dilemma, I feel like. There is President Trump, the overseas hero, who does make good deals overseas, it looks like. Not just this place, but a couple other ones. And then, domestically, the threatner of democracy. My first question is just, can we separate these two? Because they are two different things."
"ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: Hold two ideas in your head at the same time. Thank you. There you go. Absolutely. You can give this president a standing ovation for getting to this point and not give him the Nobel Peace Prize, right? I think you can look at this and say, this is a very good situation. It's something that has not happened for the last two years we've been waiting for this moment."
Bill Maher devoted roughly six and a half minutes of on-air praise to President Trump's role in securing an Israel-Hamas hostage release, beyond a portion included in the monologue. The HBO Real Time segment featured guest Arnold Schwarzenegger and panelists Andrew Ross Sorkin and Mark Cuban. Maher framed a dilemma between Trump's foreign deal-making and perceived domestic threats to democracy, saying he usually separates the two and comparing it to separating a song from an artist's crimes. Sorkin urged holding two ideas at once and suggested praise for the negotiation without awarding a Nobel Peace Prize.
