BART Could End Service at 9PM Nightly If Transit Measure Doesn't Pass and These 15 Stations Might Have to Close
"The cash-strapped BART system has revealed its doomsday scenario' of drastic service cuts if a November transit tax measure doesn't pass, with as many as 15 stations potentially closing, and service stopping at 9 pm every night. BART's social media accounts are talking a big game today about the throngs of Super Bowl riders they're getting this week, which are indeed likely to set or break ridership records for what is normally a humdrum first full weekend of February."
"But these numbers are just a synthetic sugar high, because we do not have the Super Bowl in town every weekend, and rarely will these numbers be matched. BART riders are racking up passing yards this Super Bowl week! We served 223,770 trips yesterday, about 17,000 more than last Thursday, and 14.6% of riders used Tap and Ride. BART faces a fiscal crisis that could force permanent closure of as many as 15 stations in 2027 without new revenue. The agency warns train service could stop as early as 9 pm each night and weekend morning service might not begin until 8 am. A sales-tax measure will appear on the November 3, 2026 ballot in San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties. The proposal would be a half-cent sales tax in four counties and a one-cent sales tax in San Francisco. Super Bowl ridership spikes provide temporary boosts but are not sustainable revenue sources.
