The CHP closed a 17-mile (27km) stretch of the highway for periods before and during the Saturday exercise, in a surprise announcement early on Saturday morning."
A live 155mm artillery shell exploded prematurely during a Marine Corps live-fire demonstration near Camp Pendleton, propelling fragments over Interstate 5. Shrapnel struck a California Highway Patrol vehicle and a motorcycle assigned to JD Vance’s detail, and fragments landed on vehicles parked on a freeway ramp. Witnesses reported sounds like pebbles hitting the motorcycle and a 2-inch piece of shrapnel dented a patrol car hood; shrapnel was found on the roadway. The CHP intermittently closed a 17-mile stretch of the highway, causing severe traffic delays. The exercise was canceled, the area was swept for fragments, and the Marine Corps opened an investigation.
