"The Federalist Society has for decades now carefully cultivated a public image as both the all-powerful Oz behind the throne of the American judiciary and somehow simultaneously a benign debate society that takes no role in legal and political affairs. In the Trump years, the group has doubled down on the doublespeak, claiming that they are devoted believers in the rule of law, but also that they support Donald Trump and his judicial picks wholeheartedly."
"The New York Times recently published a piece attempting to puzzle out the status of the jewel in the crown of the conservative legal movement-the Federalist Society-in Trump 2.0. And there's this strange push-me-pull-you apparently coming from FedSoc where they brag they're kingmakers and they're funneling everybody into judicial roles, but also claim that Trump is mad at them and they bear no responsibility for the lawlessness. Which is true?"
The Federalist Society cultivated a dual public image as both the dominant force shaping the American judiciary and as a benign debate society that avoids political involvement. During the Trump years the group amplified that doublespeak, professing fidelity to the rule of law while actively supporting Donald Trump and his judicial nominees. Trump publicly sparred with Federalist Society figures yet continued to rely on them to staff the judiciary. Lisa Graves states the organization was created to pipeline allies into positions of power to advance a regressive legal agenda and that it has been highly successful.
