Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez publicly rebuked Riley Gaines after Gaines posted a photo with Bernie Sanders at a rally and wrote, "we're being destroyed from within." Ocasio-Cortez suggested Gaines should channel anger into swimming faster and said she should "get a real job." Gaines tied for fifth with trans swimmer Lia Thomas at the 2022 NCAA championships and has built a platform opposing trans inclusion while serving as vice chair of the America First Policy Institute's Athletes for America. Gaines acknowledged finishing fifth on Fox News while still claiming Thomas' presence was unfair and challenged Ocasio-Cortez to a debate. A review of studies found post-transition trans athletes are "more similar to their gender identity" and that athletic ability varies widely among all athletes.
