Rep. Mark Alford held a town hall in Bolivar, Missouri, answering questions from constituents. Alford has pursued austerity-minded policies since joining Congress in 2023, including proposals on Social Security, remarks to fired federal workers, and scrutiny of Medicaid recipients. Constituent Fred Higginbotham criticized Alford's legislative performance and his support for President Donald Trump, described local governance shortcomings, and warned he may lose his farm. Higginbotham urged taxing corporations and the wealthy to fix the federal budget and directly told Alford to "take your head out of Trump's ass" and focus on representing local constituents. Alford said he would follow up with staff about the farm.
Alford held the forum on Monday in Bolivar, Missouri, where the Republican took questions from constituents. Since joining Congress in 2023, Alford has made a name for himself as an austerity-minded lawmaker. In the past year, he has suggested raising the retirement age for Social Security, told fired federal workers whose terminations he supported that God has a plan for them, and demanded that Medicaid recipients in his state justify their benefits.
I saw what could happen when a state works together with its people. This state does not know how to do that. He went on to say that he is pissed at the congressman before ripping Trump. The man is a dictator, Higginbotham said. He knows nothing about what he talks about. I listened to him for about a half hour today, and I got sick at all the lies he brought up.
You wanna straighten out the budget? he said. Start taxing corporations and the wealthy. Some in the audience applauded. Do you think we're idiots? Do you think we don't pay taxes? Do you think that we don't have to make budgets? The town hall attendee added, Believe me, you are not helping me. You need to take your head out of Trump's ass and start doing your representation of us.
