Amnesty International Describes Alligator Alcatraz Like a Torture-Fueled CIA Black Site
"When Florida's "Alligator Alcatraz," the much more widely used name for the South Florida Detention Facility, went into use in July to detain immigrants swept up in Donald Trump's ambitiously cruel deportation machine, we didn't shy away from labeling the facility as emblematic of the "era of the new concentration camp," this time on American soil. The allegations of abuse and mismanagement in the detainment center, illogically located within the middle of the swamp that is the Big Cypress National Preserve,"
"Such basic environmental concerns were at the heart of a court order in August to shut down the facility, in which a U.S. District Judge cited that "the project creates irreparable harm in the form of habitat loss and increased mortality to endangered species in the area," among other things. But wouldn't you know it: A Federal appeals court would block the closure with its own order in October, authored by a judge whose spouse has close business ties to Florida's Gov. Ron DeSantis."
Florida's South Florida Detention Facility, nicknamed 'Alligator Alcatraz,' began operating in July to hold immigrants under an aggressive deportation initiative. The facility sits in the Big Cypress National Preserve and suffered immediate flooding, pestilence, and poor conditions. A U.S. District Judge ordered closure in August citing habitat loss and increased mortality to endangered species, but a Federal appeals court blocked the shutdown in October. Amnesty International alleges torture-like practices, including migrants confined in 2×2-foot metal boxes in the sun. The facility has been linked to hundreds of detainees missing from ICE's online locator system.
