The Federal Trade Commission secured a $2.5 billion settlement with Amazon over allegations that the company misled customers into renewing Prime subscriptions. Of that amount, $1.5 billion will fund refunds for affected subscribers. Evidence indicated Amazon used sophisticated subscription traps to manipulate consumers into enrolling in Prime and then made cancellation exceedingly difficult. The settlement was reached days after Amazon's trial began in Seattle. The FTC characterized the resolution as a major consumer protection victory aimed at returning billions to Americans and deterring deceptive subscription practices.
