
Alabama Republicans petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to approve a congressional election map previously rejected for racial discrimination. The state’s Republican leadership requested a ruling by Monday so the map could be used for the 2026 midterm elections. In 2023, the Supreme Court declined to reverse a lower-court decision finding the map violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Voting Rights Act restricts lawmakers from limiting representation based on race or minority status, limiting partisan gerrymandering. A 2023 three-judge panel found Alabama Republicans intentionally reduced Black voters’ political strength and required two Black-majority districts. Alabama Republicans argued that an April Supreme Court decision made the earlier ruling invalid and sought restoration of the rejected map, consolidating most Black voters into one district.
