Joe Gebbia has been selected as the first government chief design officer to implement the America by Design initiative. The role centers on modernizing physical and digital government services to improve user experience, reliability, and software systems. Gebbia joined the Department of Government Efficiency in February and previously worked on federal retirement process modernization at the Office of Personnel Management. The position reports to the White House chief of staff and includes cross-agency coordination, solution implementation, and talent recruitment. A temporary National Design Studio will support volunteer work and agencies must produce results by July 4, 2026.
