"Speaking with The Atlantic on Sunday, Trump repeated his long-standing claim: "We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense." On Sunday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected the remarks outright. "It makes absolutely no sense to talk about the US needing to take over Greenland," she said. "The United States has no right to annex any of the three countries in the Danish Kingdom.""
"He's offered to buy it more than once, and has not ruled out military force either. But the renewed rhetoric comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension, raising questions about how Europe would respond if words turned into action. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and Denmark is a NATO ally of the United States. Any attempt to annex the island would effectively end the trans-Atlantic alliance, said Jacob Funk Kirkegaard of the Peterson Institute for International Economics."
Donald Trump reiterated that the United States needs Greenland for defense and previously proposed purchasing or even using military force to acquire it. A social media image of Greenland colored with the US flag and caption "SOON" increased concern in Europe. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated the US has no right to annex any part of the Danish Kingdom. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark and a NATO ally relationship between Denmark and the United States would fracture if annexation were attempted. A 2025 poll showed 56% of Greenlanders favor independence while only 6% want to join the United States.
