"Loyalty is one of the underlying themes in Harris' book. It's even laid out in one of the introduction quotes before the memoir begins from Kendrick Lamar's "DNA": "I got loyalty, got royalty inside my DNA." Harris writes of times that Biden, his family and his senior staff in the West Wing questioned whether Harris truly was loyal, while her own frustrations mounted from the president's staff not speaking up to defend her from outside criticism."
"In another instance, two months into Harris' bid, right as she was about to get on the debate stage, Harris writes that Biden called her. He wished her luck but then spent time on the call asking if she was bashing him to "powerbrokers." "I just couldn't understand why he would call me, right now, and make it all about himself," she writes."
Loyalty tensions existed between Kamala Harris and the Bidens, with Biden, his family, and senior West Wing staff questioning her loyalty while she felt unsupported by the president's staff. First Lady Jill Biden asked Harris' husband whether they were standing by the Bidens, which irritated Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. Biden called Harris before a debate to wish her luck but also asked if she was criticizing him to "powerbrokers," which Harris found self-centered. Harris defends Biden's mental capacity to serve but blames his staff for mismanaging his fatigue and worsening the problem. Harris has remained largely out of public view since losing the election to Donald Trump.
