"A mix of snow and ice bore down on the US north-east early on Saturday, disrupting post-holiday weekend airline traffic and prompting officials in New York and New Jersey to issue weather emergency declarations even as the storm ebbed by mid-morning. More than 14,400 domestic US flights on Saturday were canceled or delayed as of mid-morning, with the majority in the New York area, including at John F Kennedy international airport, LaGuardia airport and Newark Liberty international airport, according to the tracking site FlightAware."
"The safety of New Yorkers is my top priority, and I continue to urge extreme caution throughout the duration of this storm, New York's governor, Kathy Hochul, said in a statement. By early Saturday, about6-10in (15-25cm) of snow had fallen across an area from Syracuse in central New York to Long Island in the south-east of the state, as well as in Connecticut, said Bob Oravec, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center near Washington DC."
A winter storm produced heavy snow and ice across the US Northeast, causing dangerous travel conditions and prompting states of emergency in New York and New Jersey. More than 14,400 domestic flights were canceled or delayed by mid-morning, with about 2,100 international flights also canceled, concentrated around New York-area airports including JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty. Motorists were advised to avoid roads and commercial vehicle restrictions were imposed on many interstate routes. Snow totals reached roughly 6–10 inches along a corridor from Syracuse to Long Island, with New York City receiving 2–4 inches and Central Park reporting 4.3 inches. Ice storm warnings and winter weather advisories covered much of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. The heaviest snow eased by mid-morning, with flurries expected to taper off by afternoon.
