The FDA's approval of an at-home cervical cancer screening tool developed by Teal Health allows women to self-collect vaginal samples for HPV testing. This innovation aims to increase screening rates, as many women face barriers that prevent them from seeking traditional office visits. High-risk HPV leads to most cervical cancer cases, which sees about 11,500 diagnoses annually in the U.S. Despite existing preventive measures, many women remain unscreened, making this home test invaluable for improving cancer detection and outcomes.
"There is still a large proportion of women who could be screened for cervical cancer but are not getting screened because of various reasons," said Ko.
"We know that access to a facility can be a big barrier for people," said Colleen Denny.
