Voice of America (VOA) is set to return to the air as soon as next week following a court ruling that paused President Trump's executive order dismantling the network. The order, which affected the parent agency US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), mandated cuts to VOA's workforce and operations. Legal challenges from organizations like Reporters Without Borders resulted in a federal appeals court decision allowing VOA employees to resume work. This development coincides with World Press Freedom Day, highlighting the importance of media freedom and support for journalists worldwide.
‘A Justice Department attorney has sent an email to our lawyer, David Seide, informing him that USAGM expects VOA staff to begin a 'phased return' to work and programming to resume next week,’ said Steve Herman.
Reporters Without Borders stated that its lawyers received an email from the Department of Justice on May 3 indicating VOA staff could begin their work as early as next week.
