One student was shot and two suspects were arrested at Skyline High School in Oakland last Wednesday. Violence interrupters responded immediately to de-escalate the situation and to prevent retaliation. Youth ALIVE! coordinates violence prevention and intervention at Oakland schools and assesses potential retaliation to stop further violence. Violence interrupters reach out to victims, suspects, families and peers, seek community leads, and identify trusted elders or influencers to intervene. Doral Miles has worked as a violence interrupter for nine years and describes challenging conversations with affected families. Teams report progress but note that resolving such incidents takes time. The violence interrupter program faces threat from budget cuts.
