Video: 2 humpback whales breach right next to N.H. fishermen
"Two of them turned on their sides, just started this massive flapping of their big fin,"
"I think whales personally love attention."
"If that whale decides he's going to come up and go on your boat, you're going to dive out of the way,"
"You're no match for these whales."
Captain Dale Sprague and first mate Matt Hamilton were fishing off the New Hampshire coast when two 60-foot humpback whales breached near their boat. The whales first surfaced about 200 yards away, then breached much closer, with one plunging back and creating a tremendous splash a few dozen yards from the vessel before heading toward the boat. Video captured Sprague yelling and the crew reacting nervously. Hamilton suggested returning to Dover, but Sprague continued the trip. Sprague referenced a previous July incident in which a humpback breached onto a boat and threw two people, calling the near-miss lucky and like a SeaWorld spectacle.
