U.S. imposes sanctions on Colombia's president and family over drug trade allegations
"President Trump is taking strong action to protect our nation and make clear that we will not tolerate the trafficking of drugs into our nation."
"He's a guy that is making a lot of drugs,"
"He better watch it, or we'll take very serious action against him and his country."
The Trump administration imposed sanctions on Colombian President Gustavo Petro, his wife Veronica del Socorro Alcocer Garcia, his son Nicolas Fernando Petro Burgos, and Interior Minister Armando Alberto Benedetti over alleged involvement in the global drug trade. The Treasury Department accused Petro of allowing drug cartels to flourish and refusing to stop trafficking. The U.S. expanded enforcement in the eastern Pacific, conducted strikes on suspected drug-carrying boats, and dispatched an aircraft carrier to waters off South America. The administration added Colombia to a list of nations failing to cooperate in the drug war and threatened cuts to aid and tariffs.
