"A vulnerable man nearly blind and unable to speak English was left alone on a cold winter night with no known attempt to leave him in a safe, secure location. That decision from US Customs and Border Protection was unprofessional and inhumane."
"Border Patrol agents offered him a courtesy ride, which he chose to accept to a coffee shop, determined to be a warm, safe location near his last known address, rather than be released directly from the Border Patrol station. He showed no signs of distress, mobility issues or disabilities requiring special assistance."
Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a blind and illiterate 56-year-old Rohingya refugee from Myanmar, was found dead on a downtown Buffalo street after being released from US Customs and Border Patrol detention. On February 19, CBP agents dropped him at a Tim Horton's donut shop late at night, approximately five miles from his home, without contacting his family or lawyer. Buffalo was experiencing below-freezing temperatures at the time. The Erie County Medical Examiner identified Shah Alam's body on Wednesday. CBP stated agents offered him a courtesy ride to a warm location near his address after determining he could not be deported. Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan condemned the incident as inhumane, criticizing federal immigration authorities for leaving a vulnerable man alone in dangerous conditions without ensuring his safety.
