Iryna Zarutska, 23, was fatally stabbed on Aug. 22 just before 10 p.m. while riding the Blue Lynx Line light rail in Charlotte. The attack was captured on video and provoked national outrage. Decarlos Brown, 34, has been charged with murder in the killing. President Donald Trump called for the suspect to be "awarded THE DEATH PENALTY" on social media. Zarutska fled Ukraine after living in a bomb shelter and arrived in the United States in 2022. She lived with relatives before moving in with her boyfriend, worked at a pizzeria, and planned to study to become a veterinary assistant while taking English classes.
