UMass Lowell public safety officials sent a text at 2:37 p.m. alerting community members to a 'weapons incident' reported at Riverside Suites on South Campus. Police issued a campus-wide shelter-in-place order and instructed people to avoid the area, stay inside, and follow 'run, hide, fight' guidance while officers searched for the person reported. Lowell police described the suspect as a 5'5" Asian male wearing a gray or white sweatshirt and black shorts who was seen carrying a long weapon behind the Riverside Suites. Video circulating on social media appears to show a person aiming a rifle-style gun. State Police joined local responders and urged anyone with relevant information to call 911.
