
"Before midnight on Friday, Nov. 14, a 911 call was made from a fraternity on the 2400 block of Prospect Street reporting a person had possibly drowned at the residence's pool. When Berkeley police arrived, they said they found a "large party" of over 300 people. Officers on the scene reported "overcrowding" and "heavy alcohol consumption." Salinas was given CPR at the scene and transported to the hospital, where he later died."
"Berkeley police said the department filed a civil violation against the fraternity for "public nuisances during loud and unruly gatherings," and the fire department issued a citation for having more than 200 people at the event, violating the fire code. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office is also considering charges against the fraternity's safety coordinator for allegedly supplying alcohol to minors, police said."
George Mauricio Salinas, a 19-year-old UC Berkeley student from San Diego, died on Nov. 17 after being found unresponsive following a party at an off-campus fraternity. A 911 call before midnight on Nov. 14 reported a possible drowning at the house pool on the 2400 block of Prospect Street. Officers encountered a large party of over 300 people, reporting overcrowding and heavy alcohol consumption. Salinas received CPR at the scene and was transported to Highland Hospital, where he later died. The cause of death has not been released. Authorities filed a civil violation and a fire-code citation; the Alameda County DA is considering charges for allegedly supplying alcohol to minors. The Berkeley chapter of the fraternity has been suspended.
